You have developed a website for your business. You think it looks really good. The graphics are awesome and you know that you have an excellent product.

But, you have no customers…

Unfortunately, your work has just begun. You can’t just develop a website, throw it up on the internet and expect sales to come pouring in. As with any business, whether it’s online or offline, you have to promote it to be successful.

A good way to promote your website is to write articles. Write an article on a subject relating to your website and publish it online.

There are 100’s of articles sites that are free to submit to. This can get you targeted traffic because most of the time someone has found your article while doing an online search. Be sure to include the link to your website in your resource box. Also include URL’s to all other articles that you have written. This will only increase your exposure.

Use forums for networking. Visit forums that are in line with your product or services and actively post there. Give helpful information and advice. Don’t spam the forum.

Most forums will allow to place your signature with a URL to your site with each post. Some may even allow advertising. Just be sure that you know the rules before posting. Ignoring the posting rules is a sure ticket to getting banned.

Reciprocal linking. This has two advantages. First, the more links that you exchange the better your chance that someone will follow a link from another site to yours. Secondly, the more links you have on other sites the higher the search engines will rank your site. Just remember these important do’s and don’ts of reciprocal linking.

• Do link with sites that would be of interest to your visitors.
• Do link with sites that have an easy to find link directory on their main page. A link will do you no good if no one can find it.
• Do stay organized. Very important. Use a link exchange software or spreadsheet to keep track of link exchanges you have requested and contact information.
• Do use link directories to help you find link partners.
• Don’t link with pages that have hundreds of unorganized links on their pages.
• Don’t use link farms or (free for all) FFA pages. You won’t get traffic and the search engines may penalize you.

Another often overlooked way of getting traffic is email signatures. With every email you send you should add a few lines about your site along with your signature and URL. The amount of traffic that you get from this may surprise you.

If you have some money to spend for advertising try purchasing pay per click ads. These are the ads that appear to the right of search engine results. Your ranking is determined by how much you have bid for a particular search word compared to other businesses. You only pay when someone clicks on the link.
